It seemed to many people in the 1970s like painting had been backed into a corner and rendered obsolescent, not able to sufficiently transcend or transmute its status as everything from a commodity to a purveyor of illusionistic space. Even as many artists turned to other mediums a new generation of painters emerged who did not find a discrepancy between painting and its recent critiques.
